TOOL 2.8 – THE MONSTER GAME (ON POWER)

AIMS OF THE ACTIVITY
This game provides information on the group (hierarchy, levels of authority, leadership, who is or who would like to be); what are the rules for taking power, on the ability to do group regarding an external danger. It helps to reflect on the importance of power and its management, analysing the mode of distribution; on the system and what is happening in a given situation in the group with which you are working.
DESCRIPTION / METHODOLOGY
The facilitator gives the group a symbol object (usually a marker, but whatever object is fine) saying that within 20 minutes there will come a monster and if the weapon (the object) will not have been picked up by anyone, all the group will be annihilated. It is add that those who take the weapon can use it at his own will and shall have power over the group. It is also add that the monster may be not only external, but also internal.

The game is developed in two phases: in a first part, the group work on a methodological problem, which is followed by an operational phase that flows in the leader’s designation; in a second part there is a discussion in which the tension falls and different leaders grows.

At the end, the facilitator analyse with participants the emerged dynamics during the game.
