TOOL 2.15 – THE REPRESENTATION OF THE GENERATIONS THROUGH MUSIC AND THE GRAPHIC

AIMS OF THE ACTIVITY
Objective of the exercise is to induce reflection on operators, as there is no adolescence as an abstract concept, but as there are the adolescences as a social product according to the historical periods and social settings etc. It also wants to reflect on how it changed over time the social representation of the time of change and the future and how this will crystallize in the youth cultures and especially in the music of several generations.
DESCRIPTION / METHODOLOGY
It is bring different music each representative of a generation and an historical period and a developed juvenile taste at any given time. For example a song for the 70s, one for the 80s, to 90s and two thousand. Making sure that the songs represent the specificity of those years, if we want the new (such as Genesis or Pink Floyd for the 70s, Michael Jackson or disco music for the 80s, etc.).

It then provides each participant of large sheets with colours, and while listening to the music it is asked to them, in a relaxed atmosphere, to mark the abstract forms for each song on the paper. Forms that have no particular meaning, but that follow a bit the trend of music and their perception of it.

 At the end of several songs, they are going to see the draws and it will be seen what are the commonalities between the sheets of the same songs and the differences between the shapes of the different generations. Based on this it can make a reflection on how the forms have changed and which is the link between this and the perception of the different generations. For example, usually the music on the 70 years drawings seem to indicate a path, with a history of changes, as if there was a before and an after and a while. Instead, in the music of 80s and 90s often there are circular shapes and in any case, drawings that are closed in themselves as if it were in an eternal present. Through these observations, the group can reflect about how it changes the perception during time, the future, the change in the different youth generations and cultures that remain entangled in some way in music tastes.

During the Exercise can emerge very different reflections, it is still important to have the opportunity to be able to verify the changes encountering an aspect that is emotionally significant, as the music that has great ability to represent youth culture.
