Open Audit – Italy

The following report is part of the five Open Audit, organized in all partner countries -two in Italy, one in Bulgaria, Portugal and Spain

The Open Audit by Laboratorio was held May 26, 2016 in Formello, Province of Rome, at the youth center “Il Cantiere” Cooperative Sinergie.

The Youth Aggregation Center, which opened in November 2008, was created with the aim of creating a space where, discussion and socialization for young residents in the territory. The Center offers several free activities: study, recovery and school enhancement, juggling workshops, theatrical, artistic and manuals. Young people can take advantage of recreational and recreational moments to share with peers, from listening to music to watching movies. The center is attended by students from children between 11 and 17 years for the afternoon activities and boys between 18 and 25 years also for evening activities.

The Open Audit working Group was composed of 1 Lead 2 observers Laboratory, 4 specialized educators of Soc. Coop. Social Synergies, 2 girls in the civil service, 4 children who attend and / or have attended the center.

The meeting was structured through a dialogue and a sharing of their views on the subject NEET, along which dialogue can be identified, ideally, three parts. To facilitate and enable the discussion have been used two cards to which participants were able to respond at first independently and immediately after confronting the group, expand and enrich their thoughts through the exchange of ideas.

FIRST PART:

In the opening phase it has been explained the aim of the project or the need to identify what are the strategies for working with young people. To operate such a service, a community center, what it needs? Who are NEET?

The group in this phase was immediately switched to the listening. The level of attention was very high.

After a brief explanation of NEET, it has given way to the first tab, which were some of the definitions of NEET and inviting participants to choose only one, the most significant for them.

Who are NEET?

The answers:

  1. Young disheartened, work there.
  2. Victims of the crisis;
  3. Do not give us opportunities, we are exploited;
  4. fit with cunning; types awake waiting for the right opportunity;
  5. young people who have skills but do not see the future;
  6. young confused;
  7. Awake From Sleep: possibilities.

As you will notice, most of the young people speak of NEET in the third person, while in other young people associates personal experiences to the condition of NEET (see No. 3). Moreover, the answers are divided between those who attribute the difficulties experienced by young people to the current environment, the historical moment (the crisis, work that is not there), while others suggest that it depends on the young people themselves (wake up from sleep, adapt ), others point the finger to the difficulty of orienting (confusion, do not see any the future).

SECOND PART:

What would be helpful to CAG to change and work better?

The focus of the group is now brought to the service to which it is connected, investigating their current perception and change. In this phase, the group presents thoughtful, caring and involved.

Replies:

  1. The CAG with its network can help to socialize. It needs to grow and socialize.
  2. The CAG may represent a second home.
  3. Show that there are several things to understand that they are possible and therefore achievable.

The answers show that the CAG remains a point of reference and support for personal development of young people, especially in terms of personal relationships and the ability to know something that is beyond the individual scope.

Following were explored the characteristics that an “ideal” operator should have to work with young people and for this it was proposed to the second tab. The list of proposed definitions included an order of priorities to be chosen in the group and the participants were divided into three subgroups.

The work was carried out in a participatory manner and utmost cooperation. All subgroups have come to give the same priority to some points such as:

  1. relational skills;
  2. Listening without judgment;
  3. Creativity:
  4. Network-boy ratio first of all;

As you can see, as many as 3 out of 4 elements refer to the quality of relationship between operators and young people (1, 2:04), definitely “horizontal” before technical specifically (as may be the possession of specific knowledge and specific skills).

THIRD PART: The future …

Personal projects, the ability to imagine the change, the prospect was for comparative purposes, in the third phase. Participants were was proposed the following question:

How do you see yourself in ten years?

  1. Re-create the social fabric;
  2. outside Italy;
  3. if you have character (in the sense it shows autonomy and adaptability) is no future.

A common thread of proactivity and initiative connects the prevailing themes of the responses provided by the participants. Some can still be seen in their territory, committed to developing the local network, to build and build relationships (1). Others think they are anywhere else, either temporarily or permanently (2). Someone finally points to face the difficulties with enterprise and individual motivation.

In conclusion, the job is finished after more than two hours spent with the participants in harmoniously and in a cooperative way. The experience has to be consider positive and attest the availability and desire of the young people to be heard and inquired in the aspects that concern them closely and that often are decided at the table without a fair comparison.

The young people, NEET, and stakeholders will be invited at the events to discuss and share their views on the services available and supplied to the project materials and ideas for improvement
